As Pre-Meds, we tire constantly with the same questions during our gap year and even before graduation... What degree would make me the most competitive applicant for medical school?
And to be honest, when it comes to being competitive for medical school each degree can provide you with a plethora of options and opportunities but the real question is which degree best fits you?
I talk a little bit about my experience in the Morsani College of Medicine's MS Medical Sciences MSP3 Program in the video below and also offer a plethora of tips on how to study and schedule your semester in order to be successful in the program.
In a nutshell, I enjoyed the program, but I wanted MORE. I wanted Community!
I wanted to be in an environment that solicited growth, mentorship, and the opportunity to become a better asset to my community prior to medical school. I felt that the previous two gap years, I didn't know myself, and now I was only going to get this degree because "Deans and mentors" told me to get it. However, I started falling out of love with it, and realized that what I wanted was interconnectivity! I WANTED MORE!
As pre-meds, our priority stems from what, "schools" say we need, versus what our hearts say we need. Most times, it's the need of our people crying out to us, and we're instead turning a blind eye and deaf ear to the true needs and nature of our people --- Communities as a whole.
We shouldn't wait until medical school to understand the importance of translating healthcare policies and procedures for individuals on a local, national, and international level, but it happens. It's now in our gap--growth--years that we truly understand how we belong in these underserved communities and assess their needs emotionally, mentally, behaviorally, and physiologically.
That could mean taking a step approach to tough questions, or through mentorship and representation as a patient advocate and community member--- who better to tell the need of your people than you? Through your story!
Early on in my journey, I didn't have this mentality, but during my growth years, I am now able to find my passion and purpose, and confidence to voice the needs of the people no matter what. That wouldn't be possible if I didn't allow myself the space to grow and step out on faith by beginning with the MSP3 Program, and maturing/matriculating into Public Health!
Whether you are traditional or non-traditional, follow your heart and allow your journey to be just that... YOUR JOURNEY!
I'll do a separate video about the different programs I've applied to and if you have any questions please let me know through Instagram, YouTube, or via the Contact Page of my blog site!
As a gift... I've included all my USF MSP3 Notes and Anki Deck from my 2nd/3rdish block!
Love you all much, and have a wonderful growth year!
Yours Truly,
